WhatsApp Introduces WhatsApp Channels: A Seamless and Private Way to Stay Updated

WhatsApp is excited to introduce WhatsApp Channels, a new feature that offers users a seamless and private way to receive important updates from individuals and organizations. With Channels, users can now access a dedicated tab called Updates, separate from their regular chats, to discover and follow their preferred channels.

Designed as a one-way broadcast tool, Channels enable admins to send a variety of content such as text, photos, videos, stickers, and polls to their followers. To facilitate channel discovery, WhatsApp is developing a searchable directory where users can find channels related to their interests, including hobbies, sports teams, and updates from local officials. Additionally, channels can be joined via invite links shared in chats, emails, or posted online.

Privacy is of utmost importance to WhatsApp, and this principle extends to Channels. Admins’ personal information, such as phone numbers and profile photos, remains concealed from followers. Similarly, followers’ phone numbers are not revealed to admins or other followers, ensuring a truly private experience. The decision to follow a channel is entirely up to the user, and their choices remain confidential.

WhatsApp acknowledges that not all channel updates need to be stored indefinitely. As such, channel history will only be retained on WhatsApp servers for a maximum of 30 days. WhatsApp also intends to introduce features that allow updates to disappear even faster from followers’ devices. Admins will have the option to prevent screenshots and forwards within their channels, providing them with greater control over the content they share.

In line with user preferences, WhatsApp is committed to empowering admins with the ability to manage their channels effectively. Admins can choose who can follow their channels and decide whether their channels should be discoverable in the directory. While channels are not end-to-end encrypted by default, WhatsApp is exploring the possibility of offering end-to-end encryption for channels catering to limited audiences, such as non-profit organizations or health institutions.

WhatsApp will initiate the Channels feature by partnering with renowned global voices and select organizations in Colombia and Singapore, where users will have the opportunity to engage with diverse content and help shape the channel experience. In the following months, WhatsApp plans to expand Channels to more countries, enabling anyone to create their own channel.

Moreover, WhatsApp recognizes the potential to support admins in building businesses around their channels by leveraging the platform’s expanding payment services. Additionally, WhatsApp is exploring the option to promote select channels in the directory, thereby enhancing channel visibility and awareness.

While WhatsApp’s core functionality revolves around private messaging among friends, family, and communities, the introduction of Channels marks a significant step forward based on user feedback. WhatsApp is proud to offer a simple, reliable, and private broadcast tool that aligns with users’ evolving needs. Users can look forward to enjoying the benefits of Channels while WhatsApp continues to prioritize privacy and seamless communication experiences.
